D. bracteatus Spangled Drongo
NOTE: Solomon Is forms were considered by Doughty et al (1999) specifically distinct from D. bracteatus based on morphology, habitat, behavior, and vocalizations; Dickinson (2003) notes that the reasoning for this change has not yet been published, and, if it was, the correct specific epithet would be longirostris.

LAMPROLIIDAE (1 species)

Lamprolia victoriae Silktail
NOTE: Placement of this species has been uncertain; recent studies suggest it is a basal member of Rhipiduridae (Irestedt et al. 2008). However Boyd pointed out that the split from fantails occurred around 22 mya, indicative of family status.

MONARCHIDAE (46 species)

The family name Myiagridae is sometimes used; Monarchidae is preferred due to prevailing usage. Elevation of the genus Grallina to family status as Grallinidae has been shown to be unwarranted (Dickinson 2003). Metabolus has been merged with Monarcha (Andersen et al 2015). Recent genetic data (Jonsson et al 2016) suggested that 5 closely-related genera of the Pacific radiation of Monarchidae be merged into Monarcha; these are Chasiempis, Clytorhynchus, Mayrornis, Neolalage, and Pomarea. However this treatment was not followed by IOC v7.2 and is not herein. Nevertheless, the sequence of species proposed by Boyd is followed here.

Chasiempis sandwichensis Hawaii Elepaio
NOTE: Field work has demonstrated that the three Chasiempis taxa are sufficiently differentiated to warrant species status (VanderWerf 2007, 2010, Boyd). Pratt (in Scott et al 2001) noted that among the three forms (putative subspecies, as shown here) on Hawaii (Big Island) bryani is now isolated from the two other taxa and that some assortative mating may be occurring where the ranges of sandwichensis and ridgwayi meet. Recent genetic evidence suggests, however, that the three may not be sufficiently differentiated as to stand as subspecies (VanderWerf et al 2009).
